从属连词+doing作状语这种结构有二个来源：

第一、状语从句的主语与主句的主语相同，从句谓语为进行时态，此时可省略从句的主语+be。例如：

While he was walking in the street, he was knocked over by a fast bicycle.

= While walking in the street, he was knocked over by a fast bicycle.

第二、分词作作状语的时候，为了强调分词为何种状语，在分词前加从属连词予以突出状语的类别。例如：

Knowing her son had an accident, she rushed to to the hospital.

这个分词短语本身就是时间状语，但为了突出状语的类别，可以加上when:

When knowing her son had an accident, she rushed to the hospital.

know是静态动词，不能用于进行体，所以不能这个句子是省略了she was。

由此可知，从句连词+doing作状语，有不同的来源，并非都是省略主语+be的结果。
